The Growth Report – its relevance to Philippines’ economic growth model

In May 2008, after 2 years of research, workshops and study, the Commission on Growth and development released its “Growth Report– Strategies for Sustained Growth and Inclusive development” (Conference edition) which can be accessed and downloaded from www.growthcommission.org. The
independent Commission is chaired by Michael Spence (Nobel Laureate in Economics) and composed of 19 leaders mostly from developing countries and 1 academician. Its work has been supported by the governments of Australia, Sweden, the Netherlands and United Kingdom, the William and Flora Hewlett
Foundation and the World Bank Group. The report was written over 2 years (April 2006) and completed in May 2008.

The study focused on 13 economies that have grown at an average rate of 7 percent a year or more for 25 years or longer. In highlights on Asia, the report cited that “nine of the 13 countries that have been successful in achieving sustained high growth are from Asia: China, Hongkong (China), Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan (China) and Thailand.”

The Growth Report is a must-read for our economists, technocrats, policy makers, legislators, government officials, business sectors, civil society organizations, academicians and even for ordinary Filipinos in order for us to assess the relevance and efficacy of our country’s present economic model and policies vis-à-vis its objective of achieving “genuine” economic growth.

Truly, our policy makers should take a look at this Growth Report. Our government should indeed prioritize education, social services, and assist businesses through infrastructures. The more the government spends on these, the better it is for future Filipinos.
