The Ces Drilon Abduction: Ransom Payment Deadline Nears

The minutes are ticking with the 12 noon deadline approaching for the payment of the P15M ransom demanded for the release, in one batch, of Ces Drilon, cameraman Jimmy Encarnacion and Mindanao State University professor Octavio Dinampo by their suspected Abu Sayyaf abductors.

Ten days into their ordeal, Ces has been described by negotiator Alvarez Isnaji, mayor of Indanan town, as “sounding disturb” when she told him they were “now always tied” by their captors.

Latest reports from Zamboanga quote Isnaji as saying he had not been able to contact the kidnappers as “their mobile phones are still turned off.”

Asnaji said he just sent a text message to the kidnappers hoping they would respond.

There is no word about where the ransom ‘pay off’ would be done, if it does happen at all.

When the first captive, ABS-CBN assistant cameraman was freed last week, he was recovered between the towns of Indanan and Talipao, Sulo, just outside Jolo.

Just minutes ago this writer was told by radio journalists Zeny Masong of Radyo ng Bayan Jolo and DZBB radio’s Benjie Liwanag that the Jolo police has been instructed by ARMM police director Joel Goltiao “to form a battle-ready strike force of some 150 police officers in case the final option” has to be taken.

Philippine national police chief Avelino Razon is himself already in Zamboanga City, just a helicopterride away, “to monitor” the situation.

We wait and pray.
