Philippine Issues Writing Project Week 2
Written on Saturday, May 31st, 2008 at 7:33 pm | by NickThis second week of The Philippine Issues Writing Project is seeing a few more issues being raised. Seven entries in all, and some interesting submissions with issues that I didn’t even knew existed.
RJ Marmol of MyCheapThrills.com wrote, “The Philippines’ Biggest Problem“, which is a very interesting take on a great issue that she thinks is of greater importance than the other issues of the day. And that is ATTITUDE. I think this sentiment is shared by many Filipinos locally and abroad.
We need a radical “change of heart” and we need to do it now. It’s always been said and quoted from one of the greatest philosophers, “Aesop”, that “one little act of kindness, however little — is never wasted. Everyone must act now and contribute what they can to push for “social transformation”.
Rina of Howling At The Moon wrote an interesting post on a very specific issue, her article titled, “The Tears of Sierra Madre”, is focused on a story written by Inquirer.net on the illegal logging being done in Sierra Madre. The bigger issue that Rina is definitely alluding to, is that of illegal logging, and this has been the sentiment of even a greater issue, and that of deforestation. This is the third entry with regards to such an issue, and I believe that because of our very rural areas in many parts of The Philippines, that this is not only important for environmentalists, but it is an everyday problem for ordinary Filipinos.
Christy Sanico wrote “An Unheard Wail“, is almost a conglomerate of issues. But the focus is on The Food Crisis. But looking and reading this powerful entry, it can easily be seen as the lack of food for the poor. Lack of access to food. Food and nourishment. I read the entry, and I was really moved. For such a young individual, she emphasizes that issues such as these are not being looked over.. The Youth can see.. Personally, I am touched by such passion, the opposite of course is apathy.
Nightdreamer wrote “Empty Barrels“, now here’s an issue that will receive a resounding “Hell Yes” type of support, because true enough, it is an annoyance that any Filipino can do without. That of government posters and ads. In my view, propaganda.
Michael P. De Guzman has submitted “My Name is Not Susan“, probably the most interesting submission we have had yet. Interesting, because, this gives us a glimpse that sometimes, the most obvious, like Rice Crisis, or corruption, just isn’t an important issue to others. Thus, his entry is focused on The Gay Language, a hope that there would be a sort of dictionary or compilation of Gay Terms, and the development of such a project.
Hilda Kapauan Abola wrote “What Is 40 Philippine Pesos“, which is exactly the amount that around 26 million Filipno familes find themselves trying to budget, living under poverty. Thus the issue, of great importance to Hilda is that of poverty. It’s a very symbolic look, at just what poverty is in The Philippines. 40 pesos indeed.
Ed Maquiling wrote “Try Walking on a Host of Pathogens!“, in his own words
Environment- how we use and abuse it - is one issue I feel so strongly about. I have written an article on that, and it is found on my website.
The story is very interesting actually, a deeper look at how we can neglect our environment, thinking that it is our right to spoil it for future generations. Or maybe even unaware that their actions contribute to a polluted environment. (read one hour before and after meal)
