Pacquiao - Overconfident vs Diaz?
Written on Friday, May 2nd, 2008 at 2:22 am | by Lester CavestanyMark your calendars for June 28, 2008 for the Manny Pacquiao vs David Diaz WBC Lightweight Championship Fight in Las Vegas. But wait! Something’s not right. I just read a news report that Pacquiao only started training yesterday, less than two months before the fight. And in his Abante column, our “Pambansang Kamao” was too busy talking about college life and scuba diving in Cebu. He even said that he hasn’t signed the contract yet. And more bad news - The press conference in the States that was set for May 3 has been postponed for May 13. It seems that Pacquiao is in no hurry to fly to the States and start training with his trainer Freddie Roach. He won’t arrive in the US until after May 10 because he said he will be attending the oath-taking of incoming AFP Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Alexander Yano.
What’s going on? Why is he taking the fight so lightly? Is it on or not?
Enter boxing pundit Michael Marley! According to him, there is no way that Diaz can beat Pacquiao. He said, “I think Pacman could show up at (his trainer) Roach’s place on June 15 and beat DD (David Diaz).” Marley believes that all these reports about Pacquiao being over-confident is meant to even the odds and create some excitement for the possibility of Diaz beating Pacquiao.
Ahh, it all makes sense now. I just hope Marley’s right. We shall find out in 58 days.
