Hillary’s Mistake

There have been pundits going around the airwaves, television programs, and daily news shows, trying to convey as to why Hillary lost the candidacy to Barack Obama.  The Iowa caucus was cited, The South Carolina debacle was definitely cited, and even her campaign message of having experience was also cited.  But by far, in this writer’s opinion, the most glaringly obvious mistake that Hillary made was that she ran against a formidable opponent in Barack Obama.

I don’t think, that even her husband, Bill Clinton could have won against such a force like Barack Obama.  When every misstep was made gigantically overproportioned to the actual scenario is only proof positive as to why Hillary, in the end, was destined to lose.  It was a close battle, indeed, but in terms of how they started, this was definitely an upset of great historical proportions.

To put it in perspective, a candidate of Hillary Clinton’s name recognition alone, with her years in the public eye, with her husband being the former President, and with all she has done as a senator in her short term in the senate, should have won handily, and yet she started to struggle from the moment Barack Obama won in Iowa.  Had Obama been any other candidate, HIllary Clinton could have won with her overriding message of experience and being able to start from day one.  It was not the case, it could not have been the case, because her opponent’s message of change is what resonated with the democratic base.

Iowa was a turning point, South Carolina was a turning point, and the series of wins after Super Tuesday was also probably a turning point, but by far, it was not these turning points that made the difference in Hillary’s defeat.  It was the fact that she was facing a candidate who’s time had come, and who’s message resonated to The American people.  It is the mistake of Barack Obama that led to Hillary’s defeat, and in the end, it was the better candidate that won, no need to mince words there.

They were both formidable candidates in their own right. I think it could have gone either way. Obama won 11 straight after Super Tuesday beacause Hillary was kind of “missing in action”. But when Hillary was fully engaged, she won more states in the final stretch and Obama couldn’t deliver the knockout. What if Hillary’s late victories occurred earlier in the primary? The equation would have been totally different. So you may say that Obama is a candidate whose time has come but to me, he is not some irresistable force of nature since it was really a near run thing.

Actually Hillary’s fault is that she was too confident to win that she forget the small states and miscalculate Obama. If she had ran a good campaign and make a sure ball state to state campaign as what she and her husband did later on which she won lots of states I think Obama will not be able to make a momentum and won the primary.
