China’s Selfish Government, Myanmar’s Gain

A closer look at the heroic efforts of The Chinese Government’s actions these past weeks with regards to the earthquake that ravaged Sichuan Province may seem like a stark contrast to the criminal actions of Myanmar’s Military Junta. But when viewed through the realities of current policies towards Burma, the heroic efforts become a glimpse at the hypocrisy of The Chinese Government.

The fact is that China has fueled the atrocities of the military junta of Burma, because of their dire need to fuel their own energy needs, hotspots such as Burma and Sudan have been the source of China’s oil needs. The governments of these despicable regimes have only China to thank for their refusal to make right their human rights records.

And so, while The Chinese government is able to wow the international public because of its openness and transparency in their hour of need, they know quite well that the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis in which The Military Junta has refused aid, is partly a consequence of their political shielding of that regime from the international community.

The Chinese government knows that it cannot make the mistake that Myanmar’s regime has made, and because of their rapid response and their transparency all throughout their crisis in Sichuan Province, they have garnered some great media publicity.

But it is hypocrisy, if they are able to secure the safety of their own, while turning a cold shoulder to the over 1 million and a half Burmese people that are still helpless in the Irrawaddy Delta. They have emboldened Myanmar’s military Junta through their own need of oil.

However, in the end, China is still secondary since it must be Myanmar’s Military junta that should bear the brunt of criticism for this man-made disaster that is happening to the victims of Cyclone Nargis. While the cyclone may have been the work of mother nature, it is no doubt that the criminal inaction of the aftermath is very much man-made.

I still have no illusions that China is a major power broker in Asia, it has the power to put pressure on Burma’s military, if only China didn’t need their oil so bad. This is the predicament they find themselves in when it comes to Sudan, and it is still the reason why The Chinese government will never become a leader in human rights.

China can help its own people, with their energy needs, and even with natural disasters. But let’s not be naive to their obstruction to international justice in which they shield many human-rights-violating regimes such as Burma, in order to quench their oil thirst.

What China is doing propping up Burma’s junta is no different from the United States’ support of the Saudi Arabian monarchy. It’s geopolitics (or realpolitik), which is not to say that it’s a valid excuse.
