Are you for… impeaching Arroyo?
Written on Friday, November 7th, 2008 at 6:34 pm | by cocoyMy opinion on the matter is better political parties, not impeachment, but I’d like to ask you if you are for impeaching Arroyo. Why are you for or against it? Do you think Congress should go through with it or not? Is the latest move in congress nothing more than politics and theater?

the rabid anti-arroyo pack obviously don’t know, or care, that impeaching a president, regardless of outcome, entails expenditure of funds and resources that can be put to a better use, waste of legislative time and energy, and more hatred, recriminations and divisiveness among the populace. considering all the circumstances, such a move could only stem from a single motive - politics.
the country is facing a frightening global crisis that could buffet it like a straw in the wind. now is not the time for another crap-raking, ruthless partisanship, and covetousness for power. instead it’s time for real unity, selfless statemanship among the leaders, and genuine patriotism of all the people.
Bencard,
Don’t hold your breath…
Sometimes, it takes something ugly to get rid of something ugly, but the most important question is, will we end up with something uglier?
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again and again: Filipinos are getting what they deserve. Until they, as a whole, learn to truly suck it up, and deal with the ugly, incredibly HARD cleansing process, we will have to be satisfied with these little fits and starts that masquarade as “action.” All the rhetoric we spout will be sung to the choir. The TRUE political power in the Philippines unfortunately don’t read blogs.
Should we impeach GMA? I ask first, to what end? Will she go down as a triumph against corruption, and a glimmer of hope for good governance? I.SINCERELY.DOUBT.IT. I give as partial evidence the following names: Marcos, Estrada, Bolante, Singson…need I go on?
Will she be replaced by a someone of heroic stature who can inspire the filipino people into action and sudden discipline? Someone with Obama’s powerful dream and single minded vision, someone with Ninoy’s contagious nationalistic fervor? Until you can say yes, then I will sadly side with Bencard, and tell the self-serving instigators of this useless impeachment to focus instead on the next 6 years. Unless of course, they feel that an impeachment is the only way to boot GMA out of an office that she appears all too desperately eager to hold to, past her term.
The last “hero” who seemed to put the needs of the country before his own died on the airport tarmac 20 odd years ago. The spirit, the numbers, and the collective will all showed up at his funeral. We’ve had a few chances since then to make a difference, but did we?
Coy,
I am sorry to disappoint you, but GMA WILL NOT BE IMPEACHED. This is not to say that she does not deserve to be.
Atty. Ben is correct to say “it’s time for real unity, selfless statesmanship among the leaders, and genuine patriotism of all the people.”
But this does refer, in my humble non-lawyer’s view, to the current Palace tenants manipulating the levers of power, unless one or several of them will realize that the Filipino people deserve better.
If they can, in their hearts, truthfully say that the nation is united behind GMA than by all means let’s keep her in power FOREVER.
If Filipinos can they their lives are better today than before 2001, by all means let’s even junk the 2010 elections and extend GMA’s stay in office.
Hell let’s abolish the Republic, give away Mindanao, and install GMA as Queen.
How can the people impeach the President who is back up by the representative of the people, our Congress? We need to clean some of THESE PEOPLE and These People
Are all those officials functioning at their highest and best use?
I agree with Bencard. Teamwork is needed. Remove the bad ones and keep all the good ones.
No. It is a waste of time given that the Republic is faced with problems beyond its control.
Yes I am for Gloria as Queen!
She shouldn’t have any reserve powers though like the Emperor of Japan. Our Parliament should ensure we are a Queendom, with succession to HRH the Princess Royale Luli. No one like Mikee should succeed to the throne.

Gloria Arroyo are you listening?
Erratum in my comment:
“But this does NOT refer, in my humble non-lawyer’s view, to the current Palace tenants manipulating the levers of power, unless one or several of them will realize that the Filipino people deserve better.”
We Should Do It For the Right Reasons.
As an ordinary citizen, I agree with those who will not pursue the impeachment against GMA. She’s not good for me, but another impeachment again. Supposing the people will the case, who will replace her? Besides, we Filipinos are very kind. Look at the Marcos, and ERAP.
Honestly speaking, I don’t believe that any president could stop corruption. He/she can’t do it alone. Unless all of us will stop corruption in the smallest thing, no president can help us, not even Obama.
Thanks, and I enjoyed being here.
Yes. Because she has done impeachable acts under the constitution. What’s the law for anyway?
It’s simple, really.
(Yes, Congress probably won’t.)
If Gloria will be Queen, then it’s just as well that R.G. Cruz wrote up that fawning blog post about Luli and Luigi’s wedding. What better way to ensure that FV survives than to turn it into a High Society blog featuring the powers that be?
I at look the possibiity of impeaching GMA from economics point of view and therefore would consider it counter-productive.
There is less than 2 years to go. The divisiveness and the sanguine political partisanship that the impeachent proceedings will bring to the nation as pointed out by BenCard is not worth this adventure. And there is no assurance too that the impeachment will prosper because Congress as pointed out by Leytenian is controlled by GMA allies.
Politicians who support the move to oust GMA are mostly those people who have presidential ambitions, or politicians who would love to hitch in this political tempest for mileage and soundbytes.
2010 elections will bring some momentary benefits to the people as politicians distribute the largesse they have amassed during their past tenure… Politicians would not care anyway for the welfare of the people once they assumed their office and elections is only the proper time people can exact their sweet revenge on these politicians.
Impeachment will not change anything..it will not benefit the filipino people…
it will be beneficial only to those who are impatiently waiting to replace GMA…
the only ugly and nasty thing this country needs is a CIVIL WAR….
I nominate ‘beneficial’ as word of the year for 2008.
It sound that impeaching Gloria is a solve-all-solution.
Impitz GMA buy all means, butt to what end?
